Stegra and LKAB co-operate on test deliveries
LKAB has always said no to delivering to Stegra in Boden. It has been claimed that the capacity of the ore railway Malmbanan is not enough. This has forced Stegra to sign contracts with mines in Brazil and Canada.
Now the companies have approached each other and reached an agreement in principle on trial deliveries of iron ore pellets to Stegra, which will produce fossil-free sponge iron for the new steel plant in Boden.
"Together with the team at LKAB, we have developed a plan for test deliveries in good dialogue. We at Stegra hope that this is the beginning of a long collaboration that further strengthens Sweden's security of supply and consolidates the country's future position in the green industrial transition" says Henrik Henriksson, CEO of Stegra, to Dagens Industri.
The plan is to run trains several days in a row to see if it can work in real life. The reason for waiting until late autumn 2026 is that track work will reduce the capacity of the Ore Line during the summer months.
