LKAB starts building new office
The current office was built in 1960 in connection with the Kiruna mine. The new office will be located in the new centre of Kiruna.
"It's a kind of end of an era, but at the same time, it's a manifestation of our development and that of the whole city. We are part of the community and development here, and the fact that in a few years we will be centrally located in the centre of Kiruna points to our shared journey towards a viable future. I am proud to have been part of this journey, and to share this moment with all our fantastic employees," said CEO Jan Moström, at the start of construction.
All employees who will have their workplace in the new office were invited to the construction start. In total, around 400 employees work at LKAB's offices next to the mine, the HR building and Jägarskolan, where the community development unit is located.
The current office was considered to be at the forefront architecturally when it was built in the late 1950s. It was designed by Hakon Ahlberg, inspired by the UN Tower in New York. The tower block, which was the first high-rise building in northern Sweden, has been an important landmark for Kiruna ever since. But the 13-storey building is in need of extensive renovation and has a limited lifespan due to the long-term impact of mining on the land. LKAB is therefore building a completely new office in the new centre.
Peab has been commissioned to build the new office. The move-in will take place in 2028.
