Farms in the north strengthen Sweden's preparedness
This is according to a trend report from the farmer co-operative Norrmejerier.
At a time when crises, climate change and uncertain supply chains are reshaping our everyday lives, local food production is becoming a strategic asset. The trend report states that proximity to farms means less transport, a reduced carbon footprint - and increased resilience across society.
"Our model is based on proximity - to the farm, to production and to the consumer. It creates transparency, reduces vulnerability and strengthens trust throughout the chain," says Petra Kangas, Communications Manager at Norrmejerier.
By utilising residual streams such as whey and skimmed milk powder, a circular food economy is created that reduces waste, strengthens sustainability and opens up new export opportunities for Swedish raw milk.
Farming in northern Sweden is characterised by:
- Colder winters that reduce the need for plant protection products.
- Pastures and grassland that favour open landscapes and biodiversity
- 80 per cent of arable land is used for grassland, compared to 40 per cent in the rest of Sweden.
