Swedish Transport Administration increases investments in Malmbanan

Luleå This summer, Sweden's busiest railway, the ore line Malmbanan between Boden and Riksgränsen, at the border to Norway, will be upgraded. In addition, capacity will be increased by extending the rail yards.

The ore line is an important part of the entire Swedish rail system. The line is a prerequisite for several of the planned industrial investments in Norrbotten. A number of new industries are planned along the Malmbanan, and existing industries are expanding and converting to green production.

"It feels incredibly important that we can continue with the necessary investments on Malmbanan. This is to ensure that the railway works for today's needs, but also to be able to meet an even greater future need for transport and passenger traffic on our artery here in the north,” says Staffan Ökvist, Head of Department at the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

The track substructure will be reinforced to enable heavier trains and the new ERTSM signaling system will be installed.
