NCC builds environmental plant in Kiruna

NCC has been commissioned by the mining company LKAB to build a new environmental facility in Kiruna. The assignment is worth SEK 160 million.

LKAB currently has three facilities for its operational waste: an environmental storage facility, a waste yard and a decanting plant. On behalf of LKAB, NCC will build an environmental facility for the collective management of all operational waste.

"We currently handle around 16,000 tonnes of waste per year, half of which is scrap metal and iron. We are a large and complex business and this places great demands on us. But we also have high demands on ourselves, we want to work preventively, forward-looking and long-term sustainable. Therefore, it is also obvious to invest in a new environmental facility that will give us even better conditions for us to achieve our ambitious goals," says Stefan Lahti, Head of Department at LKAB.

The new plant will be completed in autumn 2026.
