Skellefteå municipality wants to keep all skills

Skellefteå Following the announcement by the battery manufacturer Northvolt of major cutbacks and layoffs of 1,000 employees at the factory in Skellefteå, the municipality is acting to retain all skills.

Skellefteå municipality in the Västerbotten region wants as many of those laid off at Northvolt's factory as possible to stay in the region.

“Of course, Northvolt's announcement is sad news for Skellefteå, and above all for those who risk losing their jobs. But both public and private employers in the region are crying out for labor, so I hope that as many as possible of those who are laid off will stay and that work will now begin with full force,” says Kristina Sundin Jonsson, Municipal Director in Skellefteå.

Among those affected by the redundancies are employees who are not EU citizens, but are in Sweden and working through a work permit. They may be forced to leave the country in the event of redundancy.

"Everyone working at Northvolt today is needed in Skellefteå and Västerbotten. The government needs to find solutions so that those who have work permits can stay instead of being forced to leave the country. We need to secure skills and labor so that business and Sweden do not lose momentum in the green transition,” says Lorents Burman, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Skellefteå.

Skellefteå municipality will now have a dialog with the business community, the region, the county administrative board and the Swedish Public Employment Service on how those who lose their jobs can quickly find new employment.
