Malmbanan first with new signaling system

Kiruna Since a few weeks, train traffic on part of the Ore Line, Malmbanan, has been running with the new ERTMS signaling system.

The first stage to be connected is the section north of Gällivare and almost all the way to Kiruna.

“The new signaling system, which was previously only available on the Swedish Transport Administration's pilot lines, has now been put into use on parts of the Malmbanan. This means that one of Sweden's most important freight and travel routes will have a smart signaling system that means fewer disruptions to traffic and opportunities to increase capacity on the track,” says Emma Beijer, Head of Department for ERTMS Implementation at the Swedish Transport Administration, Trafikverket, in a press release.

For a few days in early September, traffic on the Malmbanan was completely suspended on the route in question. The work on the introduction of ERTMS will continue during the fall of 2024 and spring of 2025.

“The next connection will take place on September 18 in the Gällivare control area. This means that traffic on the Malmbanan during the fall will be affected for periods, through canceled or reduced traffic that can mean longer travel times. Passengers planning to travel on the Malmbanan during the fall are encouraged to check with the train companies which departures may be affected,” says Emma Beijer.

ERTMS is a European standardized signaling system that aims to connect the railways of different countries and create a coherent rail network in Europe, thus strengthening the competitiveness of the railways.
