Swedish-Finnish hydrogen project to apply for EU funding

Luleå The Nordic Hydrogen Route hydrogen project may apply for co-financing from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy).

This has been approved by the Swedish government. The project involves feasibility studies for a 1,000-kilometre hydrogen pipeline planned along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, from Örnsköldsvik in Sweden to Vaasa in Finland.

"Sweden will become greener and richer. In Sweden, fossil-free hydrogen is considered the best solution for phasing out fossil fuels in several industrial sectors. The government's decision is a step on the way with joint efforts that provide even better conditions for the green transition of industry in Sweden," says Ebba Busch, Sweden's Minister for Energy and Enterprise.

The Nordic Hydrogen Route project is being developed by the Swedish energy company Nordion Energi and the Finnish company Gasgrid Finland. It has already been designated as a project of common European interest.

If the hydrogen pipeline becomes a reality, it can help to realise the industrial transition in northern Sweden and complement the electricity system. The Swedish government has previously commissioned the utility Svenska Kraftnät to propose how electricity and hydrogen infrastructure can be co-designed in northern Sweden.

In total, the CEF Energy call for proposals amounts to EUR 850 million and the EU can co-finance up to 50% of feasibility studies or construction works. In total, 65 hydrogen projects in the EU can apply for co-financing in this call.
