LKAB and Gällivare co-operate on residual heat

Gällivare The state-owned mining company LKAB and the municipality of Gällivare in Norrbotten have signed a letter of intent to investigate how residual heat from LKAB's demonstration plant for fossil-free sponge iron production can be used in Gällivare Energi's district heating network.

The demonstration plant for sponge iron production will generate large volumes of residual heat.

"Utilising residual heat is an obvious initiative with great sustainability potential. Through increased energy management, we take responsibility for environmental, economic and social perspectives," says Fia Bergemalm, Head of Energy and Hydrogen Technology at LKAB.

Gällivare Energi has set a goal to be able to deliver completely fossil-free district heating by 2030. Residual heat from LKAB is an important factor in achieving that goal.

"We see industrial residual heat as both a resource- and cost-effective solution for our district heating network that also gives us more options to produce heat for our customers," says Erik Karlsson, CEO of Gällivare Energi.
