88 million to reduce emissions from Rönnskär

Skellefteå The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, through the EU Just Transition Fund, is granting the mining company Boliden SEK 88 million to reduce emissions from the Rönnskär smelter outside Skellefteå.

Boliden Rönnskär is Sweden's only smelter for base metals. The smelter accounts for 80 per cent of the industry's carbon dioxide emissions in the Västerbotten region.

Rönnskär produces base metals and is one of the world's largest recyclers of metal from electronic materials. It is mainly the recycling of metal that causes the emissions. At the same time, it is important for reducing the extraction of raw materials.

Today, oil is used as a fuel to produce steam, which is needed in Rönnskär's manufacturing processes. To replace the oil, the project supported by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) will deliver two new electric boilers, a new boiler house, new transformers and a new power supply. The project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 7,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
