Stegra signs electricity contract with Uniper and Axpo Nordic

Boden The steel company Stegra (formerly H2 Green Steel) in Boden has signed two new electricity supply agreements, with Uniper and Axpo Nordic.

The agreement with energy company Uniper involves deliveries of a total of 6 TWh of electricity over six years, 2027-2032. The electricity will be used in Stegra's production of hydrogen, iron and steel in the new plant being built outside Boden.

"This electricity delivery is central to our strategy and a key step towards accelerating reductions of industrial emissions in Europe”, says Arne Österlind, Head of Energy Portfolio at Stegra. 

Uniper in Sweden is part of the German-owned energy group Uniper, which has operations in more than 40 countries and 7,400 employees.

At the same time, Stegra has signed an agreement with Axpo Nordic. It is a three-year agreement for the supply of 2.25 TWh from 2027.

“Our partnership with Stegra further demonstrates Axpo’s commitment to facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy,” says Axpo Sverige AB Managing Director Tomas Sjöberg.

Axpo Nordic, a subsidiary of the Swiss electricity company Axpo, produces renewable electricity from wind and solar power in the Nordic region. The company has customers in more than 30 countries and more than 7,000 employees.

Securing supplies of fossil-free electricity is of central importance to Stegra, which will sell fossil-free steel.
