The construction and civil engineering company Peab has been commissioned to build the mining company LKAB's demonstration plant for critical minerals in Luleå. A contract worth SEK 118 million.

LKAB will build an industrial park at Luleå harbour. There, LKAB will extract phosphorus and rare earth metals from its mining waste in Kiruna and Gällivare. Products that are needed in agriculture, electric car production and in wind turbines.

The first step is to build a demonstration plant, which will form the basis for the continuation where the plan is to build a full-scale industrial park. Peab's assignment includes groundwork and construction of the process building.

"Right now some of the biggest industrial investments in Swedish history are taking place and we at Peab are proud to play an important role in this development. We have many employees locally in Norrbotten who have long experience of building large industrial projects in the north and we look forward to building this pioneering facility for critical minerals," says Anders Gard, project manager at Peab.

The assignment is a construction contract in collaboration. The agreement covers the first phase of the project with an option for further phases. Work is starting now and the plant will be completed in 2026.
