SSAB waste heat for Loimua's district heating

Tavastehus Steel manufacturer SSAB and energy company Loimua have agreed to use waste heat from SSAB's Hämeenlinna plant in Finland in the local district heating network.

Loimua will build a heating and cooling plant on the SSAB site. The plant will have a heat output of around 10 MW and will produce around 70 GWh of district heating per year, which corresponds to the heating needs of around 3,000 single-family homes. This covers about 15 per cent of the heat demand in Hämeenlinna.

"We estimate that the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 8,750 tonnes per year. This will be of great significance in our endeavour to achieve completely carbon-neutral district heating by 2030. The project can also significantly improve the efficiency of energy production by increasing the share of heat produced without combustion," says Mika Salo, Loimua's Chief Operating Officer.

Construction will start this year and the project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
