Peab reuses asphalt in road construction

Arvidsjaur The Swedish company Peab Asfalt is reusing old asphalt paving in roadworks in Arvidsjaur.

Peab Asfalt has won contracts for paving and reinforcement layers on three roads outside Arvidsjaur in Norrbotten: E45 Slagnäs-Avaviken will be maintained. The same applies to two adjacent roads.

In order to carry out the reinforcement and surfacing measures, scarifying and deep milling are required. By milling away the top layer of the existing asphalt, around 15,000 tonnes can be reused in the new asphalt mass. This saves on both transport and the need for new material.

"It's always fun to work on projects where we have the opportunity to reduce climate impact. With the help of ECO-Asfalt and absorption milling, we significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It's also a perfect way to reuse materials," says Björn Qvarfordt, site manager at Peab Asfalt.

The work will continue during 2024 and 2025. The new way of working will reduce the climate footprint by around 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The order value is estimated at around SEK 65 million.

Peab Asfalts is one of the largest paving companies in the Nordic region, manufacturing and laying hot, semi-hot and cold asphalt. It also carries out tank paving and milling of roads. Peab Asfalt operates in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The company has approximately 2000 employees and is part of the Peab Group.
