Reduced Swedish ore production in 2023

Luleå In 2023, the production of ore decreased and thus also the turnover of the Swedish mining industry.

This is shown in the latest Mining Statistics report from the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU).

The reason is the weakened world economy, with low demand for both iron and base metals.

"The weakening of the world economy and the geopolitical turmoil in 2023 presented many challenges for the industry. Despite this, opportunities opened up in the Swedish mining industry, which can be seen, for example, in increased exploration and more exploration permits," says Carolina Liljenstolpe, economist at SGU.

Ore production in Sweden was 84 million tonnes last year. This is a decrease of 4 per cent compared to 2022. The total turnover of the Swedish mining industry (metal mines excluding smelters) amounted to SEK 65 billion, which is a decrease of 6 per cent compared to the previous year.
