Collaboration on digital twins in Luleå

Luleå The Swedish Research Council Formas grants Luleå University of Technology, Luleå municipality and the consulting company Sweco a 3-year research project on digital twins.

In the construction of Luleå Industrial Park, the project will explore the application of the digital twin tool for project management of large-scale industrial projects.

"Digital twins can be used to simulate and analyse different scenarios in a construction process, resulting in more efficient decisions," says Johan Larsson, Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Industrial and Sustainable Construction at Luleå University of Technology.

Luleå municipality is in the middle of one of the most complex projects the municipality has ever handled. Several large industrial establishments in parallel with building a larger city. It is a complicated process with many interests involved. The detailed planning process becomes a multi-stage, multi-level puzzle, with facts changing during the process.

The project will test new technologies to make challenges visible and help all stakeholders find smart solutions. A digital twin is a digital replica of current areas where different buildings and roads can be inserted to simulate different solutions.
