Urgent need for new workers in the coming years
Industry in Sweden is looking for 300,000 employees within three years, according to a report commissioned by the Swedish Industry Council from the research company Demoskop. The need for both skilled workers and civil servants is extensive throughout the country, but is particularly high in the Stockholm area and upper Norrland.
"Demand is significantly greater than the availability of the right skills. The skills shortage is a major obstacle to growth for industrial companies," says Pia Sandvik, CEO of Teknikföretagen and convener of the Presidium of the Industry Council.
The Industry Council is the joint platform for employers and trade unions to create good conditions for industry and its employees.
At the same time, a new report has been published by the industry and employer organization TechSverige, which has 1,400 companies in the tech sector as members.
The report shows that between 2024 and 2028, about 18,000 tech specialists will be needed annually in Sweden. The need for labor is both in the tech industry and in the rest of the business community and in the public sector. The report shows that skills in AI and security are becoming increasingly important.
"Good access to tech skills is crucial for Sweden. It is a prerequisite for the competitiveness of the entire business sector and for creating growth, managing welfare and climate change. The need for specialists in tech is growing, which creates many opportunities for all those interested in tech," says Åsa Zetterberg, Federal Director of TechSverige.
Today, over 200,000 people work in tech professions in the Swedish labor market. Software and system developers are the fifth most common profession in Sweden. Since 2014, there has been a significant increase in the number of people employed in tech professions. In absolute terms, the largest increase has been in the tech sector, but in percentage terms the increase is larger in other sectors.
