New locomotive workshop to secure LKAB's deliveries

Luleå The state mining company LKAB's subsidiary LKAB Malmtrafik has inaugurated a new locomotive workshop in Kiruna.

It is an investment of SEK 200 million and will be used in parallel with the old locomotive workshop built in 1955. The investment is made as part of LKAB's efforts to minimize disruptions in operations.

"We are doing this to ensure that we can maintain and repair our unique IORE ore locomotives. They cannot be taken to any other workshop because they are so heavy, and without them we cannot deliver on Malmbanan (the ore line)," says Linda Bjurholt, Logistics Manager at LKAB.

Over the years, LKAB has made major investments to increase and secure capacity on Malmbanan: Purchase of new locomotives and wagons, investment in a yard with a roundabout in Kiruna, increased load in the wagons and improvements in maintenance.
