LTU joins Northstar

Luleå Luleå University of Technology strengthens its cooperation with the telecom company Telia and joins Northstar. Telia and Ericsson's investment in 5G for industry.

The Northstar innovation program gives the university access to a new specially developed 5G network for innovation. The network is equipped with the latest technology from Ericsson.

The university can use new technologies in the 5G network for positioning, network slicing and edge computing.

The goal of the Northstar program is to accelerate the use of 5G in industry, especially in the development of smart and sustainable transport solutions.

"It feels extremely fun to welcome Luleå University of Technology to the NorthStar program. Another major and important milestone in our collaboration - which is also important for the region. The massive investments now being made in industry and the green transition in Norrbotten and Västerbotten place great demands on a robust and secure digital infrastructure. This is where 5G plays a key role - developed for industrial applications and socially critical services," says Magnus Leonhardt, Head of Strategy and Innovation, Telia's corporate business.

Telia, Ericsson and Luleå University of Technology have been collaborating on 5G for several years. Already in 2019, the first joint test environment for 5G was inaugurated on campus. Since then, 5G has been tested in various contexts - from the mining industry to healthcare, and most recently in the energy sector.
