Överkalix model in Spain

Överkalix The small municipality of Överkalix in northern Norrbotten became a role model at an international conference in Valencia, Spain.

Överkalix municipality, together with the regional Energikontor Norr (Energy Office North), participated in a conference within the Intereg Europe project FEEL, Frugal Cities through Energy Efficiency and Low-tech Communities. The theme was "The transition to the frugal city". The project involves four European energy agencies working with various municipalities and regions in Europe on frugal and simple solutions and community involvement in energy efficiency.

Överkalix municipality's work with economical energy use, winter cycling and climate leadership were highlighted as good examples during the conference, where participants from all over Europe had gathered.

"It feels great and honorable. Our municipality is part of the energy transition to a smart and fossil-free society. Through the project, we can also engage the people of Överkalix, which I believe is the key to our success," says Niclas Hökfors, municipal councillor in Överkalix.

Isabella Katsimenis from Energikontor Norr is the regional project manager for the FEEL project:

"It's great that a Norrbotten municipality is involved in Europe and brings learning home to our county. We want our region to lead the energy transition in Europe and are very positive about this kind of commitment from the municipality."
