LKAB to the government to change local plan

Gällivare The state-owned mining company LKAB is turning to the Swedish government with a request to change the zoning plan for an area in eastern Malmberget in Gällivare municipality.

The current zoning plan is an obstacle to the company obtaining an environmental permit from the Land and Environment Court.

Although the area is uninhabitable and all the houses that previously existed there have been demolished, it is still covered by several older detailed plans that Gällivare municipality has not yet amended or repealed.

"The zoning plan amendment is a mere formality that does not affect the use of the land because all the houses are already gone. But that we get a decision on the issue is of crucial importance for the green transition that we plan to start in Gällivare and which is very important for us, for our employees and customers and also for the climate," says Niklas Johansson, Director of Communication and Climate at LKAB.
