New virtual music studio to be created in Norrbotten

The development company BD Pop and Luleå University of Technology begin collaboration to create a virtual studio where musicians can produce music without geographical limitations.

The project is carried out within the framework of Let´s Create Music, which is a cross-industry innovation project at Luleå University of Technology.

- We see the need for an arena where creators can work with music creation regardless of geographical location, says Pär Soini, CEO of BD Pop. BD Pop contributes with knowledge in music production and creation, and with a network of songwriters.

The project is based on feasibility studies that examined the needs and technical barriers. One wish that emerged was a virtual studio. This will now be developed together with the games industry.

One problem with digital songwriting sessions is delay. But 5G technology opens up opportunities for several musicians to create music simultaneously with minimal delay. Part of the work will be technology evaluations and tests in the university's 5G environments.

- We want to enable sustainable music creation and production regardless of geographical location. This means that the need to travel is reduced and it also makes it easier to collaborate with musicians all over the world. We will strengthen entrepreneurship and contribute to innovation-based businesses and sustainable growth capacity in the industry. We will create a platform that provides a unique opportunity for music production, wirelessly at a distance, says Annica Bray, project manager at Luleå University of Technology.

Also participating is Anna-Karin Gullberg, researcher and lecturer in pedagogy at Luleå University of Technology and the producer and songwriter David Lindgren Zacharias.

BD Pop is owned by Region Norrbotten and eight of the county's municipalities. It is a development company for popular music from Norrbotten and supports regional artists and music productions.

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund, Region Norrbotten, Luleå Business Region, Skellefteå Municipality and Sparbanken Nord. It will end in March 2026.
