NCC receives maximum climate bonus for new bridge in Kalix
NCC has had its climate declaration for the construction approved. This means that the project is awarded the maximum climate bonus of SEK 1.5 million by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). The project has reduced carbon dioxide emissions during construction and operation by 22 percent. This exceeds the target of four percent by a wide margin.
"It is extremely gratifying that NCC, through active efforts to minimize climate impact, has succeeded in achieving a result that exceeds the target by far. They have been active in their choice of materials and choice of suppliers and have worked actively to continuously reconcile the climate calculation. The choice of materials is very important when it comes to a large bridge that contains a lot of steel and concrete," says Peter Viklund, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.
In 2019, NCC was commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to build a steel and concrete bridge just over 300 meters long and 15 meters wide over the Kalix River on the E4 highway in Norrbotten. The assignment included a climate bonus if certain sustainability criteria were met. The climate declaration reports the project's climate impact from a life cycle perspective during construction and operation.
"This is clear proof that we are doing things right and in line with the goals we have set for our work on climate and environmental impact. During the project, we have worked a lot with material selection and to reduce the footprint of each individual product through optimized designs and EPDs for purchased materials. To succeed in making such large climate savings as we have done for Kalixbron, climate issues must be introduced at an early stage and then continue to be prioritized throughout the project," says Kenneth Nilsson, Business Area Manager at NCC Infrastructure.
NCC is one of the largest construction companies in the Nordic region. Operations include construction and infrastructure projects, production of asphalt and stone materials, and commercial real estate development. In 2022, NCC had sales of approximately SEK 54 billion and 12,500 employees. NCC's shares are listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.
