H2 Green Steel gets environmental permit
In record time, the company has first obtained a building permit a year ago to start construction of the plant, and now received full environmental permission to start operating the steel plant. The process has taken 18 months, which is unique in this context.
"This is an enormously important day for us at H2 Green Steel. Most parts of the company have been involved in enabling this fast and smooth process. I am immensely proud of the team spirit and competence that have characterized this work,” says Henrik Henriksson, CEO of H2 Green Steel.
The permit is for a production of up to 5 million tons of steel per year. The industrial area in Svartbyn outside Boden is 270 hectares in size.
“This is also a big day for Sweden where we at the company, together with all the other parties involved, have shown that it truly is possible to have a speedy process also in complex permit matters in Sweden ” says Henrik Henriksson.
The municipality of Boden is pleased that the investment in the production of fossil-free steel is now proceeding according to plan.
"What is now happening at Boden Industrial Park with H2 Green Steel symbolizes in many ways the new industrialization here in northern Sweden - this is where it happens. A somewhat historic day for the green steel city of Boden," says Claes Nordmark, municipal councillor in Boden.
The company is aiming to start production in the second half of 2025. The investment is estimated at around SEK 50 billion.
