Zpark Energy Systems in new battery collaboration

Luleå The project will explore the use of spent batteries from electric vehicles in stationary energy storage systems for charging heavy electric trucks.

In addition to the Luleå company Zpark, the project involves the technology and transport company Einride, Chalmers University of Technology and the state-owned RISE, Research Institutes of Sweden.

As part of the project, Zpark will build a stationary battery charging station in which the spent batteries will be used.

"We are very excited to be part of this project and look forward to finding new circular solutions together with Einride, Chalmers and Rise. The ambition is to find new energy solutions based on end-of-life vehicle batteries that improve the cost-effectiveness of an electrified transport system and at the same time minimize the load on the electricity grid," says Zpark's Product Manager, Jonathan Jönsson.

The idea behind the project is that the number of batteries will increase dramatically in the future, and so will the amount of spent batteries. As the raw materials for batteries are limited, it is important to increase the recycling of the batteries.

The project is co-funded by FFI (Strategic Automotive Research and Innovation) and will run until 2025.

Zpark Energy Systems develops both hardware and software for electric vehicle charging. The company was founded as a subsidiary of Luleå company Grepit in 2021 and is part of Tech Invest North, which has its roots in northern Sweden and has been investing in innovative young tech companies since 2019.
