Uniper and Luleå energi collaborating on district heating

Luleå German energy giant Uniper and municipality-owned Luleå Energi are collaborating on the future of district heating in Luleå.

Uniper, which is planning a hydrogen hub in Luleå, has signed an agreement with Luleå Energi to utilize residual energy in Luleå's district heating network.

Together with the Port of Luleå, Luleå Energi, ABB and ESL Shipping, Uniper Sweden plans to establish a regional hydrogen hub in Luleå, within the BothnialinkH2 project in the new Luleå Industrial Park. Among other things, fossil-free ship fuel will be produced there.

"We are very pleased to sign an agreement with Uniper, which is the first among the new industries to jointly utilize surplus heat for the district heating system in Luleå", says Malin Larsson, CEO of Luleå Energi.

Today, surplus energy from SSAB in Luleå is utilized for district heating, which means that the district heating rate in Luleå is relatively low. The strategy now is that when the blast furnace process is replaced by fossil-free production, surplus energy from the new processes will be used for heating in the households in Luleå.

"This way of utilizing residual heat from energy processes to heat, among other things, homes is completely in line with the circular basic idea that we and Luleå Energi care about. Being able to use surplus energy from one process as input to another is a typical example of how to drive the green transition forward," says Johan Svenningsson, CEO of Uniper Sweden.
