Transport Agency gives go-ahead to Port of Luleå

Luleå The Swedish Transport Agency's decision means that the Port of Luleå can proceed with the major expansion project and start procuring external actors who can help finance, build and operate parts of the new port.

The goal is for the procurement to be completed by the end of the year.

"Now we can take the next important step. The goal is to procure a secure external partner who is willing and able to help realize and operate a new port in Luleå. In ten years, the new port will be able to handle three to four times as much cargo as today to enable the industry's green transition in the north", says Anders Dahl, CEO of the Port of Luleå.

The operator that receives the assignment will operate a large part of the port for a certain number of years. This means loading and unloading ships, managing the port's logistics, warehousing and goods flows for the Port of Luleå. After the contract period, the Port of Luleå regains control.

"The port of Luleå is critical for Sweden. The Swedish Transport Agency, like ourselves, attaches the utmost importance to the security aspect. For example, we must be able to ensure the ownership structure behind companies and consortia that want to operate in the port. For us, it is also important that the actors we procure have capacity, long-term stability and good experience of similar projects", says Anders Dahl.

In 2030, the Port of Luleå will be able to handle three to four times as much cargo as today and handle new types of goods and products for industry. This requires a new rail network, a new quay, freight-adapted terminal areas and all-weather terminals. The investments are estimated at between SEK 7 and 10 billion.
