Veidekke designs the relocation of Kiruna's church
The state-owned mining company LKAB has signed a contract with Veidekke for the design of the move. The project starts immediately and the actual move is planned for the summer of 2025.
"It feels very good that we can enter the next phase of the project. Together with Veidekke and their partners, we are now starting the detailed design for the move," says Stefan Holmblad, LKAB's project manager for the relocation of Kiruna Church.
It is because of mining that the church, as well as large parts of the old town center, must be moved.
The project planning that has now begun relates to the forthcoming relocation of the church and bell tower, the construction of a relocation route and the laying of the foundations for the new site. The project has been preceded by early investigations, a feasibility study and most recently a preliminary project in close collaboration with Kiruna Pastoral Council, the County Administrative Board and Kiruna Municipality.
"It is with great respect and humility that we, together with LKAB and our partners, LTH, Mammoet, AFRY, Tommy Nyhlund and ER-Bygg, will carry out this historic and complex project. With the collective expertise we have built up from previous relocation projects, we will jointly develop the absolute best solution for moving the church and bell tower from their current location to the new one," says Peter Johansson, Construction Manager at Veidekke/Berggren & Bergman.
