Two projects receive SEK 58 million

Luleå Two projects at Luleå University of Technology in green transition have been granted SEK 58 million by Tillväxtverket (the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth) and other financiers.

The two projects are Green Transition North - smart energy systems and Green Transition North - circular economy. The projects take place in collaboration with industrial companies working with the green transition and with small and medium-sized companies in northern Sweden.

"It's so great that we received funding for these projects, which will be of great importance for the green transition. The main focus of the projects is circular economy and smart energy systems", Karl Andersson says, professor of  Pervasive and Mobile Computing at Luleå University of Technology.

In the projects, researchers and 15 companies in northern Sweden collaborate: LKAB, Northvolt, H2 Green Steel, Uniper, ABB, Hitachi Energy, Skellefteå kraft, Pite Energi, Luleå Energi, Bodens energi, Vattenfall, Ericsson, Hexatronic, AFRY, and Lumire.

The project Green Transition North - smart energy systems deals with modern flexibility solutions and new principles for controlling hydropower. Green Transition North - circular economy focuses on digital product passports, which means sustainability data that enables circular products and business models. It is also about the 6G-connected industry of the future, increased sustainability through modularization of products and circular business models.

The projects involve LTU Business, Boden's development, IUC Norr and Skellefteå Science City to ensure the important link to the region's small and medium-sized enterprises. The European Regional Development Fund contributes 40 percent of the total budget. The rest comes from Region Norrbotten, Skellefteå municipality, Luleå University of Technology and participating industrial companies.

Luleå University of Technology plans to employ 15 PhD students within the research initiatives Creaternity, SUN and Arctic Centre of Energy (ACE) for the two projects. The doctoral students will work together with participating companies and the SMEs that connect to the projects.
