Plans to build powerlines along the coast

Luleå Svenska Kraftnät, responsible for the power grid in Sweden, seeks funding from the government to invest over EUR 775 million in powerlines along the coast in northern Sweden to meet the increased electricity needs of new industry.

New industrialisation in northern Sweden, with investments in fossil-free production, will increase electricity consumption significantly. At the same time, renewable electricity production is expected to expand. According to Svenska Kraftnäts' forecast, 5,000 MW of new industrial capacity and 4,000 MW of renewable electricity generation will be needed in northern Sweden.

"These desired increases in input and output create a great need for network reinforcements," says Peter Wigert, CFO of Svenska Kraftnät.

In order to have the lines ready by the time they need to be put into service, Svenska Kraftnät wants to shorten the lead times in the investment process. Normally, it takes 12-15 years from the decision on expansion until the lines are ready to be put into operation. Now Svenska Kraftnät wants to halve that time.

The package of measures, which it calls "Norrlandskusten", is a pilot project that needs approval from the government.

The package includes a new 400 kV line to Boden where H2 Green Steel is to build a new steelworks; a reinforcement of the line between  Finland and Boden and a new 400 kV line to Skellefteå for the needs of the new Northvolt battery factory. There are also plans for a connection line between Boden and a new industrial area in Luleå where Talga and LKAB have plans to build factorys.
Earlier, Svenska Kraftnät has started planning a line to Hybrits' planned plant in Malmberget.

Svenska kraftnät is an authority that is operated in the form of a state-owned enterprise.
