Hybrit receives €143 million from the EU
The money will be used for an industrial and commercial-scale demonstration of an entire value chain for hydrogen-based iron and steel production, from mining to fossil-free steel.
Of the €143 million, €108 million will be used for the construction of Hybrid's demonstration plant in Gällivare, €5 million will be used by LKAB to demonstrate fossil-free production of DR pellets and €30 million will contribute to the development of electric smelting of hydrogen-reduced iron at SSAB in Oxelösund.
"Hybrit is paving the way for a fundamental change in the global steel industry. It also shows how quickly the green transition can happen. A few years ago, the possibility of producing zero emission steel would have sounded like science fiction. Now green steel is entering the market. The support granted through the Innovation Fund is proof of the importance and potential of this technology, and the European Commission is convinced that this flagship project will strengthen the EU's overall competitiveness," said Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the European Green Deal.
Hybrit is one of seven projects receiving a total of €1.1 billion in support from the EU's Innovation Fund.
The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest funding programmes for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
