Background

The Laver project

Älvsbyn Boliden has explored mineral resources of copper, gold, silver and molybdenum in Laver in the municipitality of Älvsbyn in northern Sweden.

Multiple key permits are required prior to development of the deposit. These include the mining concession permit and multiple environmental permits.

In 2014 Boliden applied for a mining concession covering the the Laver deposit. In december 2016 Boliden´s application was rejected by the Swedish Mining Inspectorate Bergsstaten. Boliden has appealed this decision to the Swedish Government. In december 2020 the Swedish Government rejected Boliden´s appeal.

There has already been mining in the area. During 1938-1946 mining took place in a small underground mine. There is also a long history of exploration. In the early 1970´s and in 1997 Boliden placed renewed focus on copper explorations in the area. In 2007 Boliden started copper exploration to define a large volume mineral resource suitable to low cost open pit mining.
